In the aforementioned basic material units, during the period from 2002 to 2021, a total of 3,769,632 kg of seed was collected from pedunculate oak, Turkey oak, sessile oak, narrow-leaved ash, black walnut, birch, Siberian elm, black locust, silver lime, and bald cypress.

In 2008, the Republic of Serbia officially became a member of the European OECD Scheme for the Control of Forest Reproductive Material Moving in International Trade. As a result, the export of forest reproductive material was enabled, primarily pedunculate oak seed, to the European Union market.

Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) exhibits a very pronounced periodicity in seed yield, which makes it impossible to ensure a continuous supply of acorns in sufficient quantities for the regeneration of existing stands and the establishment of new forests of this most valuable native broadleaved species in Serbia. To help bridge this problem as much as possible, a center for processing and storage of pedunculate oak seed was established in the Forest Estate “Morović,” with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Water Management. The facility provides controlled conditions for storage, with optimal air humidity and temperatures ranging from –2 to 0 °C. Construction of the seed center began in 2004, when the first cold storage unit with a capacity of 80,000 kg was built. To address the problem of black rot, a fungal disease that attacks acorns during storage, further development continued in 2007 with the construction of a plant for thermal seed treatment, with a processing capacity of 4,000 kg per day. Thermal treatment, or thermotherapy, involves exposing pedunculate oak acorns to a water bath at a temperature of 41.5 °C for 2 to 2.5 hours, in order to eliminate the pathogenic fungus responsible for black rot. The thermotherapy equipment represents an original domestic technical and technological innovation. A second cold storage unit, with the same capacity as the first (80,000 kg), was built in 2009 to meet the acorn storage needs of other branches of PE “Vojvodinašume.” In the same year, a pre-chamber serving both cold storage units was constructed. Its role is to prepare acorns for storage and to condition them for distribution and use after the storage period.

Nursery Production (Forest Nurseries)

The timely availability of appropriate planting material is one of the key preconditions for the successful regeneration of existing forests and the establishment of new ones. By applying accumulated experience and adopting modern technological advancements, PE “Vojvodinašume” annually produces the planned quantities of seedlings, both for its own needs and for the demands of the market. This production is realized with the use of modern mechanization and equipment, which facilitate work and contribute to achieving higher efficiency and improved results.

The planting material of forest tree species is predominantly used for the implementation of planned tasks within the enterprise, while ornamental species are intended for sale on the market and for donations, upon request, to schools, local self-government units, and various interest groups.

The existing capacities in the nurseries would be sufficient for regular forest management if there were no need for remediation and reforestation caused by droughts and windthrows. Over the past five years, in young and middle-aged stands and plantations across all four branches of the enterprise, severe damage was caused by storm events, which made remediation and reforestation indispensable. At the same time, damage also occurred in the nurseries themselves. As a result of storms accompanied by hail in 2019 and 2020, the production of seedlings and base material in the “Šmaguc” nursery was completely destroyed, while in the “Čelarevo” and “Karlovača” nurseries, more than 50% of seedlings were destroyed. In addition to the remediation of windthrows and dieback resulting from adverse abiotic factors, it was also necessary to undertake remediation of damages in poplar stands and plantations caused by harmful biotic factors. These circumstances were reviewed and analyzed at the meeting of the Department for Forestry, Ecology and Development held on 18 February 2020 at the enterprise’s headquarters, where the need was emphasized to improve nursery production with the aim of increasing nursery capacities and securing sufficient planting material, both for the enterprise’s internal needs and for the growing demands of the market. Through the sale of seedlings, the enterprise would generate income, while through donations to various institutions, interested individuals, local self-government units, and numerous interest groups, it would continue to operate in a socially responsible manner.

The nursery production of JP “Vojvodinašume” is registered and organized within a total of 15 nurseries located in the territories of 12 forest administrations. As a result of continuous professional work and targeted investment, between 1 and 1.2 million high-quality seedlings of forest and ornamental tree and shrub species are produced annually and prepared for planting. In order to preserve the gene pool of indigenous species and enable their reintroduction, as well as to meet the needs of afforestation in protective zones along watercourses, roads, and settlements, the production also includes black and white poplar.

In all company nurseries, care and protection measures for planting material are systematically applied. Production is carried out entirely in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Forest Reproductive Material (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia, No. 135/2004, 8/2005 – corr. and 41/2009), with the necessary professional and technological support of forestry research institutions.

The nursery production of poplars and willows is strictly purpose-oriented and the result of prior planning. This means that nearly every seedling produced in the nurseries is designated for specific site conditions during the production process, ensuring that it will have optimal conditions for growth.

Thanks to the results of long-term cooperation with the Institute of Lowland Forestry and Environment in Novi Sad, highly productive clonal varieties have been introduced into production, making the best possible use of the site potential. Namely, the site analysis determines the choice of tree species, so the otherwise limited land resources suitable for forestry production are used rationally and sustainably. Previous experience has confirmed that once selected varieties, i.e. clones, cannot be a permanent solution for the successful establishment and cultivation of poplars and willows. Therefore, the creation of new selections and their testing in field experimental plantations is the subject of continuous and long-term work, with the support of specialized institutions.
